Mercedes Service A vs B: what each includes and costs

Service A is the smaller Mercedes service, built around an oil and filter change and a safety check. Service B adds a new cabin filter and a longer inspection, so it costs more. At average mileage your car needs one service a year, alternating A and B, and a number after the letter, as in B1 or A3, adds extra jobs that have fallen due.

The difference between Service A and Service B

Both services replace the engine oil and oil filter and run a set of safety checks, and Service B adds a new cabin filter and a longer inspection.

Service A

Service A is the minor service. Mercedes-Benz dealer groups list this core work. The technician:

• replaces the engine oil and oil filter

• checks and tops up the fluid levels

• checks and corrects the tyre pressures

• inspects the brake components

• resets the service indicator

Service B

Service B is the major service. Dealer service lists add a new cabin dust or combination filter, and Mercedes-Benz UK says Service B also checks all the components that affect the car's safety and ease of use.

Some UK and American dealer pages list brake fluid under Service B, but on Mercedes service sheets it is a separate item due every two years. That is why it often arrives with a B, shown as an extra code.

Electric Mercedes models get Service A and Service B too, with a check on the high voltage battery and its cables and sockets, according to Mercedes-Benz UK.

What the number after A or B means

A number after the letter on the dashboard means extra jobs have fallen due at this service. Mercedes-Benz UK describes each A and B as work to the car's service sheet, "including additional work based on the age and mileage of your vehicle". A Mercedes workshop instruction tells technicians to read two codes from the instrument cluster, the service code (for example A) and a workshop code (for example 505), which together generate that car's service sheet.

The meanings below come from published UK dealer and Mercedes specialist guides. They also match the workshop codes a former Mercedes service adviser recorded from real cars.

• A1 or B1: brake fluid replacement

• A2 or B2: brake fluid, plus cleaning and greasing the sliding sunroof

• A3 or B3: air filter, plus the fuel filter on a diesel or the spark plugs on a petrol

• A4 or B4: the jobs listed for 3, plus the sunroof

• A5 or B5: the jobs listed for 3, plus brake fluid

• A6 or B6: the jobs listed for 3, plus brake fluid and the sunroof

• A7 or B7: automatic gearbox oil and filter change

• A8 or B8: gearbox oil and filter, plus the sunroof

• A9 or B9: gearbox oil and filter, plus brake fluid

So a B3 on a diesel is a B service plus a new air filter and fuel filter.

Treat the list as a guide. At least three UK garage websites publish a different list that reads B1 as an oil and filter change, which adds nothing, since every A and every B already includes one. A 0, or a second letter such as BH or AK, varies more between models. The final word is the service sheet your garage prints from the workshop code, so ask for that list of items before you agree a price.

How your Mercedes decides which service is due

Your Mercedes counts down to its next service and shows which letter is due. Current owner's manuals call this the ASSYST PLUS service interval display, and it shows the time or distance left. Mercedes workshop documents also use the names ASSYST and FSS (Flexible Service System).

The service indicator adjusts to the way you drive. Mercedes owner's manuals say it can shorten the interval for mainly short trips, long periods of idling and frequent cold starts. Some also list frequent high load, or diesel particulate filter regeneration that keeps getting interrupted.

UK dealer guides put the first service, an A, at 12 months and a B at 24 months, after which the two alternate. Mileage limits vary between sources. One Mercedes-Benz dealer quotes 12 months or 15,500 miles for new cars, whichever comes first, while another quotes 10,000 miles for the first A. The figure on your own service indicator is the one that applies.

The reset matters too. On many models, the Mercedes reset instruction gives the maximum interval only when the technician confirms oil to the right Mercedes approval, sheet 229.5 for petrol engines or 229.51 for diesels. If a technician resets the indicator without finishing the service, the same instruction says to set it back.

What a Mercedes service costs at a dealer and at an independent

Service B costs more than Service A, and any number after the letter adds parts and labour to either.

At a Mercedes dealer

Mercedes-Benz UK says a dealer quote comes in two parts: routine maintenance and recommended additional items, which depend on the car's age and mileage. Its ServiceCare service plans, which spread servicing and MOT fees over 12 to 48 months, start from £23 a month at the time of writing (September 2026), based on two services for an EQA under 12 months old.

For cars over seven years old, Mercedes-Benz Service Select takes at least 25% off the labour rate for A and B services at participating dealers and fits Mercedes StarParts, priced up to 25% below the equivalent GenuineParts. Mercedes excludes AMG and electric models, and you must register first through a Mercedes-Benz account.

At an independent garage

Whoever you ask, quote against the full code, such as B3 rather than just B, and check the price includes the extra items. Otherwise two quotes may not cover the same job.

Warranty and service history at an independent

An independent service does not, in itself, void a Mercedes warranty, provided the work follows the Mercedes schedule and uses parts of matching quality. Competition and Markets Authority guidance on the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order says a warranty that requires routine servicing inside the dealer network, or branded parts for work it does not cover, may breach competition law. A carmaker can still refuse a claim if incorrect work or a failed third party part caused the fault.

Mercedes does keep one benefit for its own network. Mercedes-Benz UK renews its free Roadside Assistance, for up to 30 years, only after a recommended service at one of its dealers.

The service record now lives online. For most Mercedes cars built from mid 2008, Mercedes says the Digital Service Booklet is the only way to create genuine proof of maintenance, and independent garages that can service to manufacturer specifications get free access. Before you book any garage, dealer or independent, check that it will:

• read the service code and workshop code, and work to the service sheet for your car, extra items included

• use oil with the Mercedes approval your engine needs, and parts of matching quality

• reset the service indicator and confirm the oil it used

• record the service in the Digital Service Booklet and give you the Digital Service Report

• give you an itemised invoice that names the service, such as B3, and lists every extra item

Mercedes Service A and B questions

Is a Mercedes B service a major service?

Yes. Service B is the larger of the two, the equivalent of the major service other brands sell. It adds a new cabin filter and a longer inspection to the Service A work, and Mercedes-Benz UK says that inspection covers all the components affecting safety and ease of use.

What is Service B1 on my Mercedes?

B1 is a B service plus a brake fluid change. Brake fluid is due every two years on Mercedes service sheets, so it often lands on a B. A few garage websites give the 1 another meaning, so ask your garage to read the workshop code and confirm the extra items before the work starts.

Is the B1 service necessary?

Yes, when the car asks for it. Mercedes owner's manuals warn that service work done late or incompletely can lead to extra wear and damage. A skipped brake fluid change also leaves a gap in the Digital Service Booklet, and Mercedes-Benz UK advises keeping your latest service report for when you sell the car.

Which is more expensive, Mercedes Service A or B?
